"Pilates will always be good; it's never going to go out of style."  - Eve Gentry

Core dynamics was created in 1996 to carry on the development of the Pilates method passed down by first generation teacher Eve Gentry. Eve has trained with Joseph Pilates over 24 years, his student of the longest tenure.

Eve Gentry was a dancer, teacher, coach and choreographer throughout her 50-year-plus career.  She served as a teacher and associate with Joseph Pilates in New York City from 1942-1968.  During this time, Eve had a radical mastectomy in 1955 and knew that the only person she could turn to for help was Joseph Pilates.  There was so much muscles removed she could not even lift her arms.

With Joseph's help and guidance, she was able to return to dance in one year's time.  She was one of the few people trained by Joseph Pilates.  She went on to develop her own techniques (Gentry technique), further enhancing and mining the depth of Joseph Pilates's principles, anatomical functional approach and exercises.

Eve had a lot of injured patients referred to her by doctors for rehabilitation.  She worked in the last 15 years of her career as a healer, helping people who couldn't walk at times to be able to walk again.

Joseph Pilates and Eve Gentry Lineage

Interview with Kevin Bowen, Owner and Director of Core Dynamics Pilates.  Kevin is the Co-founder, past President and former executive Director of the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA), the first global community that help certify Pilates instructors.  Kevin has worked closely with Michele Larsson, the protege of Eve Gentry, in developing and refining the Core Dynamics program that embodies the Pilates method passed down by Eve since 1998.

4 Things that make Core Dynamics Teachers Training Program Unique from others

One

Core dynamics is a Boutique program that individually grooms thinking Pilates teachers while adhering to Joseph Pilates’s philosophy, principles and Eve’s fundamentals.

  • Core Dynamics’s pedagogy is thought-provoking approach and not rote learning exercises or movements.
  • We take an individual approach when working with the student - not mass production.  We make sure students understand the exercises of Pilates method are, and critically, how to adjust the Pilates Method to work for everybody, and not just select few clients.
  • We do not spoon-feed information, but we spoon-feed education and thinking approach to nurture the students to be thinking Pilates teachers.
  • Core Dynamics adheres to the original Philosophy and approach of Joseph Pilates as well as the fundamentals of Eve Gentry.  Eve’s unique approach includes fundamental of exercises and movement that help to incorporate and connect the dots of how we teach movement.

“We expect teachers to embody the Pilates method and to learn about their own bodies and incorporate all into something uniquely theirs,” added Kevin.  “We provide thought-provoking ways of thinking about the questions they ask, so that they learn how to find answers to questions later when they are no longer in training and do not have our hands-on guidance.”

Two

CORE DYNAMICS as a selective connected family that keeps the roots and essence of Joseph Pilates’s and Eve Gentry’s teachings.

“We choose to have only selected locations in USA, Canada and now in Singapore,” says Kevin. “If we run a program that has been duplicated and send out to 60-70 locations around the world, we start to lose the roots and essence of the program.”

Kevin said that having a successful business is not at the expense of losing Eve’s and Joseph’s spirits.

“We put priority of having very qualified teachers and educators be part of the program to pass down and keep the tradition of how Pilates was originally pass down throughout the years, like how Joseph passed to Eve, and how Eve was the first person to  incorporate her fundamental approach instead of the ‘hardcore’ approach,” he asserted.

“We like to make sure we are always in contact with our students.  Core dynamics is a family, and that’s they way we want it to be,” said Kevin.  “The people involved in Core Dynamics are extremely knowledgeable and experienced in Pilates education.  Even after our students graduated, we would want everyone to always reach out with questions and stay connected with me and everyone involved Core Dynamics.”

We approach Pilates still from the standpoint of history and tradition where we teach the principles of Joseph Pilates.

Three

Gentry Technique: A Reductionist approach that is not just a series of blind exercises

Eve Gentry developed an extensive grouping of fundamental exercises.  She used fundamentals to assist people who had issues with their bodies which prevent them from exercising easily.  Typically, there is a series of exercises that is taught to clients, and that works most of the time.  But if people came into the Pilates method with injuries, unbalanced or no movement experience, then fundamentals need to be utilised to teach people how their bodies are supposed to move.

“The fundamentals are found within all the Pilates exercises, but sometimes it is difficult to teach them if you are teaching the advanced exercises.  What is unique in our program is that we teach our students to take them apart, and put them into pieces, and eventually put the pieces together so they work for everyone,” said Kevin.  “We don’t just teach a series of rote-learned exercises.”

Many schools teach some of the same exercises Core dynamics does, since they are the Pilates exercises.  “But we teach a deeper meaning, philosophy and principles of the movements,” explained Kevin.  “We teach students how to look at an individual’s unique body, and make that body learn how to do the Pilates exercises using the fundamentals.”

Core Dynamics therefore imparts a different set of tools and knowledge to the students, allowing them to be more successful in supporting, nurturing and teaching anybody - not just healthy bodies.

Four

Pilates as Internal transformation for teachers: inside-out

A successful teacher needs to be a qualified Pilates practitioner.  “We can’t just learn the “choreography” of the exercises, “ said Kevin.  “We get our students to embody them to have a deeper connectedness and empathy with their own bodies, and they can be the best facilitators and teachers to their clients.”

How has Pilates evolved since Joseph Pilates's era?

There has been a lot of exercise physiology and biomechanics learnings since Joseph Pilates’s era.  Bear in mind that Joseph was always tweaking and progressing with his work, and he imparted that information to the teachers that he trained.  We have to accommodate the human bodies with lifestyle changes since then, for example, the advent of computers and use of smart phones means we are constantly looking down on our phone.  We don’t exercise as much as before.  We have to look at the changing world and teach the changing world.

“The good news is the function of the body is the same as the beginning,” said Kevin.  “And we change and adjust the training program based on the changing knowledge and body needs while keeping the fundamentals and principles, just as Eve had done.”

Eve Gentry's 4 Rules for Her Students

Eve has four rules for anyone who trained with her.  “Your problems along with your street clothes stay in the dressing room.  We do not involve or share our problems with our clients.  We are there as professional movement instructor, said Kevin.

“If your client or students do not understand what you are trying to get them to do, it is not their fault.  It is yours.  You, as a creative teacher, has to figure out how to teach them to move,” said Kevin of the second rule.

Of the third rule — “We should be training our clients so well they do not need us anymore.  We trained our clients to understand and live in their bodies,” said Kevin.  “That’s unheard of these days as we are worried to lose our clients if they don’t need us anymore.”

“Finally, as Eve always said, in order to be an effective teacher, you have to always be a student,” Kevin emphasised.
